Moving abroad to work is exciting. It is your chance to experience exciting city life in a new country, sample their work culture and social customs, all the while earning money in the local currency. For most immigrants, the exchange rate is a promising one as it offers an economic advantage over the home currency. Travel, cuisine, novelty in every daily activity, and access to a high-quality life – what’s not to like?
The path to applying for a job overseas is not a straight one. There are procedures to be followed and precautions to be taken. Here are some sure-fire tips that every applicant has to follow so that he or she can navigate the uncertain terrain of applying for jobs in another country.
1) Be as hands-on as possible: Sure, hire a consultant in your home country or an overseas one. But be in the loop and find out as much as possible about the process to be followed and each step in detail.
2) Start early: Begin early – if possible, start at college or during the first few years of employment. This puts age on your side, as immigrant-friendly nations want young, adaptable talent.
3) Have a realistic outlook – the job scene of that country is understood accurately by following employment agencies, job portals, exclusive company recruitment blogs and networking sites. Keep up with these to know the trends and keep aware of the news in your sector.
4) Understand what your role is known as in the country and industry: Understanding the requirements and responsibilities of the role will help you identify the big players and tailor your résumé to stand out in their searches.
5) Be ready to put in an appearance: This lends your profile credibility. If you are available for an interview as soon as you are shortlisted, there is a chance they would pick you over a candidate they need to wait for. Have your visa processing up to speed so that you can attend whenever called in. Write your cover letters to each company afresh so that they do not sound generic and trite.
